Vereins Kirche

Black and white photo of Vereins Kirche by Alan Tonnesen

Fredericksburg and the Texas hill country have many examples of architecture imported by the German immigrants. Octagonal buildings are so different from the run of the mill style that they stand out in the landscape. Most of the ones I have seen are not residential, but serve some more public ends. This church is now in the city park, Marktplatz, in Fredericksburg.

A Very Vine Day - Keep Moving

Black and white photo of vine covered weathered buildingby Alan Tonnesen

Vines seem to be consuming this weathered wooden building in Fredericksburg in the heart of the Texas hill country. The linear texture of the old wood and the more random and rounded texture of the leaves contrasts with the smoothness of the sky. It reminds me that anything that stands still will be overtaken by something. Even today, the once state-of-the-art company, Kodak, ...

Longhorn Watchsteer

Black and White photo of longhorn skull of by Alan Tonnesen

Fredericksburg is an old town primarily settled by German immigrants in the late 1800's. The economy of the surrounding Texas hill country was farming and ranching and the town served the needs of the farmers. Old stone buildings abound and the town has become a destination for tourists. And tourists coming to Texas expect longhorns and the proprietors accommodate. This unfortunate fellow no looks ...

Fredericks-Bird. Metal on metal?

Color photo of steel and glass bird by Alan Tonnesen
Fredericks-Bird

Alright, that's a corny title, but since the next few photos that I will be processing come from the Texas hill country of Fredericksburg (get it now?), I'm sticking with it.

This bird was perched in the yard of what I'd have to call a flea market of colorful stuff. In fact even with the background out of focus, finding the bird, was like one of ...

Ruggedness of the juniper ash - aka Cedar tree

Color photo of juniper ash (texas cedar) tree by Alan Tonnesen

I can't quite articulate what I like about this photo of an old juniper ash, known in the Texas hill country as a cedar. I gives the impression of having had a pretty hard life, but has survived. We get wrinkled, these guys get shaggy. When they are knocked down, they begin growing towards the sky. They look nice and green during ...

Surreal Sunset - how to print?

Photo for Today
Color photo of Surreal Sunset with silhoutted trees by Alan Tonnesen

I have been cleaning up my hard drive portfolio of images and processing ones like this. Looks sort of like a real sunset, right? It is, almost, except that it is a composite of the original plus a reversed image of the trees. What I really like about it are the vibrant colors and the complex pattern of the dark tree branches and leaves. ...

Live Oak Shadows on Church Steeple

Color photo of live oak shadows on white appalachicola church steeple by Alan Tonnesen

The early morning sun cast shadows from a large live oak tree on the steeple of this old white wooden church, backed by a clear blue sky in Appalachicola, Florida. The branches from the oak framed the steeple beautifully. I really wanted to go inside to see if it was equally photogenic, but there was no one to ask ...

If Elected, I will just say "No!"

This young gorilla had tried to have his way with his elders. Running around, screaming, jumping on, demanding his way. But, after attempts to divert him, they rejected his entreaties. So he went outside, found a rock and sat there in a classic (human) two-year-old's pout. Sort of reminded me of our US Congress!<< MORE >>
